Verisimilitude

This music video creates verisimilitude in that it presents a reality that the audience has an experience of, which in this case is being heartbroken. It shows a women, after the end of a relationship feeling down and reminiscing the relationship. From personal experience and others I know of people that prefer to be on their own to think and this video is showing this.

It also shows an example of trying to find her own identity, as now she is single she may feel as though she has to change to find someone else "guess you gave me things, I couldn't give to you".

Adele is shown as looking quite vulnerable too as the video is in black and white and she is on her own, isolated. Feeling in this way also shows vulnerability.

This video shows reality as much as possible in that it is her walking along a river at normal pace, dressed in casual autumn clothing, viewing sites, with birds flying by. The narration flows in a chronological sequence which shows realism.

The only aspect of the video that is not realistic is the fact that it is in black and white. The artist would not be viewing black and white and therefore it is an effect to make it look more mellow and upsetting.

How far does your video encourage audiences to reconfirm or challenge who they are when watching your video?

How far does your video encourage audiences to reconfirm or challenge who they are when watching your video?

My music video would have different effects on certain social groups. For example, if someone was watching the video who had once suffered from the mental illness it may be able to reconfirm who they are as a brand new person, starting afresh, as my artist pulled through it and ended well.

If someone was watching who hadn't experienced anybody with the mental illness it may challenge who they are in that they may have been very naive to how serious a mental illness is, so the emotional edge that my video has ( the lyrics "i'm sorry to be the guy who tried to leave you on your own in this world that is all full of goodbyes ) may change their feelings towards someone with an illness.

However the video may reconfirm who the audience is in that they knew how serious and heart breaking a mental illness can be and it would help them to believe the hope and success of someone with a mental illness as my artist, at the end of the video was well.

Besides the narration of the video, the original idea of having someone dancing in my video may challenge the way the audience is in that they may have only seen dancing as a voyeuristic gesture or for fun whereas I have shown it in a way that shows narration in an emotional manner.

I have also contradicted the idea of a beach being a fun light hearted environment to be in, with someone potentially trying to commit suicide there. This may challenge my audience, especially as they are a younger generation, and therefore they may see the beach in a different light now.

My video is very different from a typical video as it is showing drugs and drink in a non - glamorised manner. It shows the terrible consequences of it and therefore, hopefully it would challenge who my audience are to become more careful with alcohol and drug use.

Audience theory - cultural positioning

Younger generation - 14-21 would view my video as being inspiring especially if they know someone or are going through a mental illness themselves. If they are not then they may not understand the video or may not want to understand it.

I think that women would appreciate this video more than men because of the dancing side of it. Also the narrative is quite full on and therefore boys in the younger generation may not appreciate it as much. Although as the artist is a male it may interest them more.

I think that a wealthy person would look at this as if money doesn't matter as this video is about a persons health whether they be wealthy or poor.

I think that the poor would understand this video and may relate to it more than the wealthy as the majority of them may be troubled themselves. The only thing that may discomfort them is the artist wearing a suit at the end as they may not be able to afford this but hopefully they would just see it as a representation of a well turned out boy.

I do not think that an audience of different ethnic background would deconstruct my video in different ways. If anything they may just wonder why the actors are not of different ethnicities.
