Verisimilitude

This music video creates verisimilitude in that it presents a reality that the audience has an experience of, which in this case is being heartbroken. It shows a women, after the end of a relationship feeling down and reminiscing the relationship. From personal experience and others I know of people that prefer to be on their own to think and this video is showing this.

It also shows an example of trying to find her own identity, as now she is single she may feel as though she has to change to find someone else "guess you gave me things, I couldn't give to you".

Adele is shown as looking quite vulnerable too as the video is in black and white and she is on her own, isolated. Feeling in this way also shows vulnerability.

This video shows reality as much as possible in that it is her walking along a river at normal pace, dressed in casual autumn clothing, viewing sites, with birds flying by. The narration flows in a chronological sequence which shows realism.

The only aspect of the video that is not realistic is the fact that it is in black and white. The artist would not be viewing black and white and therefore it is an effect to make it look more mellow and upsetting.

How far does your video encourage audiences to reconfirm or challenge who they are when watching your video?

How far does your video encourage audiences to reconfirm or challenge who they are when watching your video?

My music video would have different effects on certain social groups. For example, if someone was watching the video who had once suffered from the mental illness it may be able to reconfirm who they are as a brand new person, starting afresh, as my artist pulled through it and ended well.

If someone was watching who hadn't experienced anybody with the mental illness it may challenge who they are in that they may have been very naive to how serious a mental illness is, so the emotional edge that my video has ( the lyrics "i'm sorry to be the guy who tried to leave you on your own in this world that is all full of goodbyes ) may change their feelings towards someone with an illness.

However the video may reconfirm who the audience is in that they knew how serious and heart breaking a mental illness can be and it would help them to believe the hope and success of someone with a mental illness as my artist, at the end of the video was well.

Besides the narration of the video, the original idea of having someone dancing in my video may challenge the way the audience is in that they may have only seen dancing as a voyeuristic gesture or for fun whereas I have shown it in a way that shows narration in an emotional manner.

I have also contradicted the idea of a beach being a fun light hearted environment to be in, with someone potentially trying to commit suicide there. This may challenge my audience, especially as they are a younger generation, and therefore they may see the beach in a different light now.

My video is very different from a typical video as it is showing drugs and drink in a non - glamorised manner. It shows the terrible consequences of it and therefore, hopefully it would challenge who my audience are to become more careful with alcohol and drug use.

Audience theory - cultural positioning

Younger generation - 14-21 would view my video as being inspiring especially if they know someone or are going through a mental illness themselves. If they are not then they may not understand the video or may not want to understand it.

I think that women would appreciate this video more than men because of the dancing side of it. Also the narrative is quite full on and therefore boys in the younger generation may not appreciate it as much. Although as the artist is a male it may interest them more.

I think that a wealthy person would look at this as if money doesn't matter as this video is about a persons health whether they be wealthy or poor.

I think that the poor would understand this video and may relate to it more than the wealthy as the majority of them may be troubled themselves. The only thing that may discomfort them is the artist wearing a suit at the end as they may not be able to afford this but hopefully they would just see it as a representation of a well turned out boy.

I do not think that an audience of different ethnic background would deconstruct my video in different ways. If anything they may just wonder why the actors are not of different ethnicities.

Conventions essay

"Sometimes, working within constraints produces the most interesting work" (Branston and Strafford). How have you used real media conventions to produce interesting or effective coursework productions?

Personally this quote means that working within conventions of music magazines and music videos creates limits but not enough to effect the quality of potential that your product can be. I agree with this statement as I stuck tothee conventions of both of these products and feel that I made interesting products.

In a music magazine one of the main conventions is to have a central image, normally of an artist or band. My central image was my artist, following the conventions, to which I used direct address with the audience and had her overlapping text and other pictures to show she was the main importance. This made my product look very interesting and convincing to be a really front cover of a music magazine.

In my advanced portfolio, being a music video I used Goodwin's theory and followed the conventions of notion of looking. To do this I had a shot of Jonny singing to himself in the mirror and therefore us seeing his reflection. This caused direct address to the audience making it more personal and adding interest to the video. A particular part of motion of looking was voyeurism which was a convention that I challenged. The reason for this was because it would have not have matched my song or genre therefore I did not feel that it was appropriate. This shows my progression from foundation as I had more confidence to take risks in challenging conventions rather than sticking by them and by doing this I feel that it has benefited my music video in that it is better than my music magazine. Therefore I could say that I actually disagree with the quote as by not following the constraints I produced an interesting product.

In my music video I used red as a house colour. I felt that this enhanced the ideology of the product and matched my genre characteristic appropriately. As I used the red throughout it was able to add a flow to my magazine and create a brand identity. This is an example of me following the conventions but in a minor way.

In my advanced portfolio I also used red as a house colour, but I produced this colour in so many other ways. For example using props such as the red frame, and the red ribbon, etc. even down to the detail of clothing and sweets. Therefore this shows my progression of my understanding of this particular convention from foundation to advanced as I was able to enhance it so much more in my music video which made my product extremely exciting and interesting.

On my music magazine I also followed a convention of having a masthead which was the name of my magazine 'Impulse'. I did this in a fairly ordinary way being at the top of the page in big letters, generally standing out so that it is familiar to the audience. I also took inspiration from other magazines and overlapped the picture of the artist on top of the masthead which shows progression of the general convention.

For my music video I chose to follow the convention of having a narrative video rather than a performance based or a conceptual based as I felt that it matched my genre characteristics more. This shows that when making my important decisions I kept thinking about my genre characteristics which is something I was not as good at with my music magazine, being that I chose my masthead actually before my artist. The narrations matched well with the location that the video was set in, and also I had a interesting aspect of hannah dancing on the beach acting as the voice in his head which is part of the narrative. This is something that I have not seen be done in other music videos and therefore you could say that I slightly enhanced the conventions to make my product look more interesting which is agreeing with the quote.

Post production homework 02/02/2012

One editing technique I used in I movie was the reverse tool which made my footage play in reverse. This was done to create a meaning that was to tell a story of his day - a secquence of events to get him to the bedroom, almost like he was telling the story of his day. This toll gave my video an eerie abstract effect to gain interest and make it different from the rest of the video. This was a very easy technique to do as all I needed to do was select the bit of footage and tick a box but the concept in general is quite abstract and therefore it was a risk whether to take this path or not.

Another tool I used was a drag bar which changed the speed of my footage. This was so that I could match the tempo of the song with my visuals, e.g. When hannah is dancing on the beach it was slowed down to match the tempo of the song. This was to compliment the music and keep that audience's feelings calm at this stage of the music video. Overall this was effective and made it looked professional, although according to my audience feedback one of them wasn't keen on the contrast between slow mo and normal speed footage which was slightly disappointing.

In one particular part of the track the violin was really emphasised at it sped up the tempo of the music so in which case I used a fast cut montage effect to make my visuals change on time with the beat of the violin. This was done to add an abstract concept to compliment the fact that he was feeling strange from drink and drugs and in a very light environment in the hospital. I wanted it to make the audience feel like the artist was trapped with this mental health issue and wanting to escape from it. I received a lot of comments about this particular section and I personally was very proud of it as I found it very difficult to get the change of visuals to match the tempo of the music. By creating this technique successfully it took a lot of time and concentration and therefore it proves that I was able to use this software to its best potential as I understood exactly what to do and how to do it which shows how my confidence and skills has progressed from foundation.

Towards the end of my music video the words of the chorus changed from 'today's the day I die' to 'today's the day of life' and therefore I felt like I needed to do something quite dramatically different to enhance the difference in emotion and therefore I used a wipe transition to make it look as though us as the audience was flicking the pages of a book to tell a story of his day. Generally this technique worked well as it was an original idea although there were a few limitations with the software in that I couldn't lengthen the transition as long as I wanted too. I felt that I really studied I movie well to know what was available for me to use, e.g. The wipe transitions. And this really paid of as this part of my music video was a great success

Post-production essay

“The post-production process can be the most important part of the filming process”. How important has the post-production stage been in your foundation and advanced portfolios and how have your skills developed over these two years?

For my foundation portfolio I created a music magazine whereas for my advanced portfolio I produced a music magazine, which both required editing skills.

One piece of software that I used for both tasks was photoshop, and within this software I used a tool called the magic wand tool. This enabled me to super impose one picture in to another. For my music magazine Isuper imposed an image of my artist onto a plain black background to make her stand out and create an almost 3D feel to the product. This tool was very easy to use and worked effectively although I don't think that is was as quite successful as how I used it in my advanced portfolio for my cd cover. Within my cd cover I had to super impose his jumper on to a white background while making sure that it was the right size etc. this worked a lot better than my foundation portfolio as it looked a lot more professional where I was more confident with the tool.

Another technique I had to use to create my music magazine was overlapping text and images. This was to make the product more interesting and look like existing magazines. It also made the front cover look a lot more busy and full of eye catching material. I did this on photoshop using layering and rotation of images. Overall it worked well and was successful but I feel that I could have done it slightly better in that some parts were a lot less noticeable than others which was something that I was trying to avoid doing.

With my music magazine I used a transition tool called wipe right/left. I did this to make it look like this particular part of the music video was telling a story, as if the pages were being turned. I feel like this was a real risk on my behave and I found it very hard to portray but I am glad that I took the risk as I feel it made the video more interesting and different from anything else I've seen. This proves that my skills developed from foundation as I was able to use the software to the best ability and take risks with it.

For my double page spread in my foundation portfolio I used quite a busy background picture and therefore it was hard to overlap text on it that was easy to read. In order to prevent this I used colourisation and brightness to make my background image look very dramatic and rugged but still contrasting enough to be able to see the text. I feel that this worked well but because I was still new to the software I do not feel that I used this tool to its best potential.

When creating my music video I felt very confident using the software I movie so I was able to use it to its best potential. In doing this I created a fast cut montage effect by trimming shots and speeding the transitions up to make them look like flashes on a certain part of my music video when the music speeds up. This matched music to visuals really creatively and also added interest to the video, keeping the audiences attention throughout.

Practice Question - research and planning

a) In foundation level there was a lot less equipment to have to think about and therefore all I had to remember were my flatplans of magazine and a camera. I was a lot less organised in foundation and chose the props on the day of the photoshop. I wanted to it look ragged so I found some old items such as a rug, an old guitar, candle stand, and when I got there there was an almost table like thing which worked extrememly well. My time was organised in that I kept to all my deadlines despite starting the course a term later.

I think the fact that I asked so many people in my target audience what they think that would appeal to them, and I took a risk of not really planning it in too much detail actually really paid off as I am very proud of my product.

The problems that I encountered were that when it came to editing I had so many ideas that I did not know how to finish my product off. If I had had a set plan like I did in A2 I could have got it finished a lot quicker and maybe perfected it more. I had ideas in my head but didn't portray them as well as I wanted too.

For my advanced portfolio I was a lot more confident in my product and had it planned very early on in the year. I was so excited by the concept of producing a music video that I could not wait to get started. As I was travelling far away to the beach I needed to make sure that I didn't forget anything and therefore to do that I produced a check list and as my friend was putting things in the car I ticked them off on the sheet and managed to not forget anything. I had a clear shot list and timetable in which to do them in. When arriving to the beach I did follow this but towards the end I was coming up with more and more ideas and therefore it had got a bit confusing as to what shots I had done. Also the tricky issue with this was that all my storybarding and shot lists were blowing away in the wind. My time management was a lot better as I was often completing tasks before they had even been set so that I could go back and improve them to my best ability.

By having a clear plan I was able to get everything that I needed to do in time and also do even more while taking advantage of being at the beach. I used absolutely all of my shots and therefore those extra ones were really needed. I felt so much more confident and enthusiastic about my advanced portfolio that I was able to plan it a lot better, and I feel this shows in my outcome.

B) In the foundation portfolio I found it a lot easier to organize my actors as I only needed one and that was my sister so it was easy to chose a day to take photographs of her. The setting was a little harder for me as I new that I wanted somewhere rugged but I didn't know anywhere local so we traveled to Huntingdon.

I am glad that I made the effort to travel as I really liked the location as it fitted in to my genre perfectly, but if I am honest my planning wasn't good enough but I do not feel that this ruined my photographs, but if anything made it better. I always told myself that I needed to take a huge range of shots so I could choose the best one and that is exactly what I did and this aspect worked very well because I had a large choice. Although I didn't plan the location and props that well I had a clear image as to what she should wear and pose like.

The only real problems that I encountered was the fact that my sister was cold when taking photos of her so this limited our time, but I personally feel that this could not have been solved as she was wearing clothes that I wanted her too.

In my advanced portfolio it was a lot harder to organize my actors as there were two and we are all in full time education so therefore it was harder to get a day off when we were all free. I planned clothing, especially for Hannah, and my setting was always obvious to me because of the lyrics of the song. My props were also all planned with a written list and them all in my storyboarding. I even had photographs of them posted on my blog previous to filming to receive feedback.

I was a lot more organised with props and location in my advanced portfolio and through this I was able to produce a higher quality outcome despite it being a lot more difficult. I think this was partly due to the fact that I enjoyed the conventions of a music video a lot more that the concventions of a music magazine as I tend to watch more videos than reading music magazines and therefore I could relate to it more.

C) I felt that my scripting of my foundation task was not as detailed and planned as what I did for my advanced task. I did do a flat plan of my product but I found that my final piece changed so much from this whereas my music video was nearly 100% accurate to my storyboard.

For my foundation task I must have done about 10 drafts due to the lack of planning. I did not feel passionate to this task as I did my music video. My problems were that I did not ever like my final product it was more that I was getting frustrated with it and therefore towards the end it was getting a little half hearted.

My storyboarding for my advanced portfolio was a lot more detailed and planned with clear annotation. Every time I came up with a new idea I also made sure that I wrote it down on my blog as an online diary so that I would not forget it and could get feedback. This was something that I didn't do with my foundation level.

D) In my foundation task I used survey monkey to research in to my target audience. I feel that I did not ask enough questions and did not receive enough detailed answers in order to help me move my product further. The good thing was that I chose my target audience to be my age and therefore I could relate to that and get the basics from my own knowledge. With the lack of research I feel that I didn't quite meet the conventions as well as I could have.

In my advanced portfolio I did extra target audience which I feel really benefited me. I did a more detailed questionnaire on survey monkey and received a lot better range of answers. I also did an audience profiling which allowed me to really study someone of my target audience to really get a feel as to what they are looking for in a music video. What was similar to last year was that I chose a target audience that included my age so again I could benefit from my own knowledge.

(30 mins)

E) In my foundation portfolio I really had to research in to music magazine as they are not something that I read so I had absolutely no idea what their content was. I feel that I researched very well and bought a lot of magazines that allowed me to rip them up and annotate them etc. Whereas in my music video task I did not have to research as much as I was aware of the conventions and already knew which videos to take as inspiration. I found that the music video conventions were a lot more structured due to Goodwin's theories and therefore I was able to tick them off more easily.

The research that I did do benefited me so much, especially in the foundation task as without it I would not know what the conventions were. In doing my research I was able to produce a product that followed the right conventions and looked professional (especially in my music video).
